Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid was born in Biyanibazar, Sylhet on 5th July 1945. He came from a well off aristocratic Muslim family. He studied in M C College Sylhet and Dhaka University. He has a rich political background and well known and recognized as an honest, sincere and dedicated political leader.
His political career was started during his student life with the active involvement against the Ayub Khan government. During the 60’s he was actively involved in national politics related to the mass upsurge of 1969 and the liberation war that followed in 1971. He got the affectionate acquaintance of the great leader Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the other leaders of the then period.
After the establishment of Independent Bangladesh the 13th Council of Bangladesh Students Union was presided by Mr. Nahid and was well appreciated by Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He is the one of the seven steering members of Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee. He was also the founder president of Bangladesh Youth Union.He contributed a lot in restoring the communal harmony of Bangladesh happened in1993 caused by the destruction of Babri Mosque in India.
Engaged as one of the secretaries of CPB in1973 he continued as the organizational secretary in CPB for long. He was elected as the general secretary of CPB in 1991. After that considering the qualitative change in the national and international political arena he joined in Bangladesh Awami League along with his fellows in 1994.
Mr. Nahid is the life member of Dhaka University Alumni Association. He is the trustee Board member of Moni Singh-Forhad Memorial Trust and life member of Bangladesh Film Centre as well. He is the writer of many books and journals and his books were published in the Ekushe Boi Mela of 2006, 2007, 2008. He is still writing in a National daily and Weekly Magazine.
Mr. nahid attended many international council, seminars and travelled to England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, United States, UAE, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Rumania, Sweden, Cuba and other countries. He also gave speech in the 53rd Session of United Nations General Conference in 1998. He also attended the 36th Session of UNESCO’s General Conference.
Mr. Nahid was elected as Member of Parliament from Sylhet-6 (Biyanibazar) in 1996. He played significant roles holding important position in Ministry of Education, ministry of foreign affairs and other fields.
Mr. Nahid was elected as Member of Parliament from Sylhet-6(Gopalgonj & Biyanibazar) once again in the 9th parliamentary election of 2009 and become the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Education since 6th January 2009.
He is very simple in his personal life and well as a different personality to all. His wife Zohra Jesmin is a Govt. Official. His two daughters are the students of Dhaka University.
